1. Hotel Bardo

5 STAR

Hotel Bardo the best hotels in Tulum

An invitation to be present…

Located in Tulum, 6 km from Tulum Archeological Site, Hotel Bardo provides 5-star accommodation with a restaurant, free private parking, a garden and an outdoor swimming pool and a bar.

Hotel Bardo feels like a secluded, exclusive retreat, despite being just a short drive, walk, or bike ride from the center of town. With an emphasis on highlighting the Mayan jungle and unique design sensibilities of Tulum’s artisans, the lobby and common areas here are just exquisite.

The main common area here is the hotel’s giant pool – one of the biggest in Tulum, surrounded by strategically placed greenery and trees.

Guests can expect beautiful bohemian decor, jungle-inspired textures, and exclusive beach bungalow layouts – which admittedly are signature aspects of so many of the hotels in Tulum. It’s a bit over the top (in a good way), and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

7. Azulik Tulum

5 STAR

Azulik the best hotels in Tulum

The Mystical Experience of Tulum

Reconnect with nature at this eco-conscious treehouse hotel on Tulum’s dramatic coastline. Fall asleep by candlelight and wake with the sunrise from your cosy nest among the trees.

The AZULIK complex consists of 48 villas inspired by the elements and indigenous South American heritage. Even though the amenities and décor differ, all villas are promoting harmony with nature. Expect decks hanging over the beach in a gravity-defying manner, bathtubs carved out of a log, and whimsical wicker furniture. There is no electricity in the villas so you can truly disconnect (note that this also includes no air conditioning).

Dressed head-to-toe in white, the hotel staff were willing and friendly throughout. With a focus on Mayan wellness, the spa offers a host of specially-designed treatments, taking inspiration from the five elements: water, earth, wind, fire and sky. Daily activities range from Mayan ceremonies, to meditation classes, and morning yoga in the dome is the perfect way to start the day. The hotel’s rugged beach and its clothing-optional policy makes for a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of loungers and parasols – plus a dedicated bar.

Azulik is home to three excellent restaurants: Kin Toh, Tseen Ja and Cenote. Kin Toh, famous for its Instagrammable nests floating above the jungle canopy, serves a delectable menu of Mayan-Mexican delights.

For instagrammable guests, please be aware of a no-photo policy. A strict camera policy at Azulik Tulum means, “Click it = you get a ticket” – a very pricy one.

10. Encantada Tulum

4 STAR

Encantada Tulum the best hotels in Tulum

Your Private Paradise

This small, service-oriented beachfront boutique has a quiet spot on the southern end of the Hotel Zone that remains in walking distance to restaurants, bars, and shops. The mid-range Encantada is strongly focused on preserving and sharing local culture: Its restaurant serves authentic regional dishes; its bar pours local craft brews and liquors and hosts local music nights; and the property uses regional artisanal goods throughout. The eight spacious, eco-friendly guest rooms have no TVs, and only half have air-conditioning, but they do have fans and private furnished terraces. All eight of Encantada’s spacious rooms have exactly the same design, decor, and layout — the only difference is the views: ocean view or garden view. Entrances are comprised of three large, floor-to-ceiling windows that open up to allow the natural sea breeze to cool the room. While there is no air-conditioning in half of the units, each one has multiple fans that keep most guests happy.

The restaurant’s native chef specializes in authentic, local (and healthy) dishes from the Yucatan. Delicious (and stateside-priced) dishes include well-marked vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options and feature items like tacos with homemade corn tortillas, fresh salads, ceviche, and cochinta pibil. A free breakfast is served in the restaurant and includes egg dishes, yogurt and granola, fresh breads, fruit, and coffee or tea. The bar selection also tries to stay local and showcases hyper-local craft beer as well as a local tequila and mezcal selection.

TULUM BEST HOTELS MAP

What is the best area to stay in Tulum?

Spectacularly positioned on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean, Tulum is a late-Maya site that was at its height from around AD 1200 until the arrival of the Spanish. The name, which means “enclosure” or “wall,” is probably modern. It is thought that the site was originally called Zama, or “dawn,” reflecting its location on the east coast, and the west-east alignment of its buildings. Its inhabitants traded with Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Guatemala, and central Mexico.

The town center referred to as Tulum Pueblo, straddles the highway (called Avenida Tulum through town) southwest of the Cobá junction. It’s at least 3km to the beach from here, but transportation options are plentiful

In this area of Tulum, you will find:

  • Aztec Ruins
  •  Affordable eateries and hotels

ZONA HOTELERA

From the highway at the Cobá junction, a road leads about 3km to the coastal road servicing the Zona Hotelera. This string of waterfront lodgings extends more than 10km south of the ruins, and the road eventually enters the Reserva de la Biosfera Sian Ka’an.

In this area of Tulum, you will find:
