1. Tortuga Bay – Higuay

Tortuga Bay

A luxurious boutique hotel designed by Oscar de la Renta with a serene, romantic atmosphere

If you’re looking for luxury, VIP treatment, and boutique intimacy in Punta Cana, the Tortuga Bay Hotel is the clear winner. Some of Santo Domingo’s chicest accommodations can be found at Oscar de la Renta’s (a local legend born in nearby Santo Domingo) designed property.

For maximum privacy, all of the rooms are located in one or two separate, canary yellow buildings. Furniture and décor are dominated by dark wood, marble flooring, and island-inspired accents. A wicker canopy tops the four-poster beds. Combined with framed drawings of leaves and fish, Rattan chaise armchairs look elegant. There is a tastefully tropical aesthetic to the look. Each of the 30 suites features jetted tubs, beautifully appointed bathrooms, personal butlers, and ocean-view balconies.

Every amenity, from the white-sand beach to the hotel’s free airport transfers and expedited immigration service to its world-class spa, is of the highest quality. Rooms are equally luxurious as the hotel’s amenities. One of the most appealing parts of this resort is its semi-private beach. There isn’t much space, but it’s more than enough for the few guests to spread out. Almost any time of the year, the turquoise waters are calm enough for swimming or snorkeling. Kayaks and paddleboards can be rented for free.

Tortuga Bay guests have access to additional amenities at Puntacana Resort & Club, where the hotel is located. The Westin Puntacana Resort & Club offers a number of restaurants, beaches, and other facilities for guests at Tortuga Bay. At Six Senses Spa, you’ll find a wide range of massage and beauty treatments as well as hydrotherapy rooms, saunas, and a private pool. Tortuga is surrounded by Pete Dye’s 18-hole La Cana golf course, which is part of the Punta Cana Estates complex. The course has been highlighted in “Golf Digest” because 14 of its 18 holes are along the ocean.
The suites come with golf carts and cruiser bikes. If there’s anything that will make guests balk here, it will most likely be the price and lack of entertainment in the evening

2. Sanctuary Cap Cana, All-Inclusive Adult Resort – Cap Cana

Sanctuary Cap Cana, All-Inclusive Adult Resort

Adults-only all-inclusive luxury resort where you’ll feel like you’re in a Spanish village

In the heart of Punta Cana on a lovely white beach, lays Sanctuary Cap Cana. The adults-only hotel offers 323 rooms and is just 15 minutes from the airport. In spite of its quaint appearance, this luxury resort looks like a Spanish Castellano village by the ocean, and it’s part of the still-developing Cap Cana complex, a little further from the main resort areas.

While all rooms feature jetted tubs, a furnished outdoor area, and a jetted tub outside, the upgraded units also feature hot tubs outside, living rooms, and/or private pools. While the decor varies depending on the sections, most rooms have a light, elegant design with white walls and linens, beige marble floors, and wood furniture. Beach-inspired touches such as gold light fixtures or vibrant blue throw pillows add character to this luxe hotel.

Spa Sanctuary offers 20,000 square feet of treatment rooms, a juice bar, whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas, a bridal room, and a half-moon-shaped pool in the spa’s interior courtyard. Several modern cardio machines and free weights are available in the fitness center. Fitness classes such as yoga and water aerobics are available, as are sports and games such as ping-pong, beach volleyball, horseshoe, and darts.

The Sanctuary Town is a plaza of cafes and bars serving all-inclusive food, and nightly entertainment is provided here. Aside from buffet restaurants, Asian, Italian, and seafood restaurants over the water, there is 24-hour room service, as well as bars that serve non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages. Nevertheless, some past guests have complained that the food and the alcohol are lacking quality or variety.

3. Catalonia Royal Bavaro – All Inclusive – Adults Only – Bavaro

Catalonia Royal Bavaro - All Inclusive - Adults Only

Uncommonly quiet, adult-only hotel with no noisy entertainment or raucous bar scene.

Catalonya Royal Bavaro is an upper-middle-range, adult-only property that will perfectly cater for visitors looking for a tranquil escape. With 255 rooms, a lack of noisy entertainment or party-style bar scene Catalonya Royal Bavaro is a luxurious oasis in Punta Cana’s paradise.

All rooms in the hotel are spacious – starting from 37 square meters, and visibly designed for couples. Elements like no-doors showers, jacuzzi for two and four-poster king-size beds definitely add to a romantic aura. Room’s furniture is modern and elegant – wooden accents, and tiled floors.

As for the hotel’s facilities, guests can visit a spa, gym, two swimming pools, putting green, as well as access a private beach. The main swimming pool is located right into the center of the hotel, yet its atmosphere is private and quiet. The pool features a swim-up bar as well as a whirlpool. The second swimming pool is an infinity-type one facing the beach. The spa features a steam room, whirlpools, and sauna. For an extra fee, guests are offered a variety of massages and treatments.

There are also two a la carte restaurants that don’t require prior reservation. The main restaurant called Thalassa serves all three meals of the day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner which are included in the all-inclusive package. Another restaurant Cata Tapa is an elegant choice for dinner with some tapas specialties on the menu.

4. Iberostar Grand Bavaro Hotel – Bavaro

Iberostar Grand Bavaro Hotel

Modern property

Iberostar Punta Cana’s most luxurious and photogenic all-inclusive resort features a photogenic Greco-Roman design with 274 rooms and is part of the Grand Collection.
Iberostar Grand Bavaro is on the northeast coast of the island, on Bavaro Beach, about 17 miles from Punta Cana International airport. Located in one of the most beautiful parts of the Dominican Republic, the next-door beach has earned the Blue Flag, an internationally recognized award for cleanliness, water quality, and safety.

Among the 274 rooms, there are four types: Suite, Ocean View Suite, Swim Out Suite, and Ocean Front Suite. A neutral palette is used throughout the hotel, with interesting historic photographs on the walls, and quality linens on the beds, including a fabric canopy. Each room has a spacious bathroom with dual sinks, jetted tub, flat-screen TV, iPod dock, Gilchrist & Soames toiletries, bathrobes, slippers, and a separate foyer with closets.

Suites make up 181 of the units, but views vary because this resort borders Bavaro next door and guests may see the garden, walking path, or separation between the two. Suites with a view of the sea (60 units) have the same layout but typically are higher up. Suites with swim-out pools (19 units) have a pool that feeds into one pool for all units, but it is not connected to any main pool. Not much in the way of views here. Swim-out pools can sometimes feel like large private pools due to how few people use them. The most expensive room is the Ocean Front Suite (12 units), which has direct access to the beach or ocean and is the easiest to get to.

There are three pools, two whirlpools, and a large beach where most people spend their days, but palapas and daybeds are reserved by those who get up early to watch the sunrise. This area has an outdoor swim-up bar serving frozen drinks, beers, and cocktails. In addition to the following bars, there is a cigar bar, late-night bar, and lobby bar. Guests can enjoy Japanese, Italian, French, and Surf and Turf a la carte restaurants with a wider selection of premium liquors, wines, and beer (though they may need to request such items).

Close to the beach is a gym and spa (with hammams for couples and treatments for the whole family). Views of the sea can be enjoyed from the fitness center, and classes like Tai-Chi and spinning are offered. The animation team also offers archery, tennis, golf, and other games. There are free snorkeling lessons, scuba diving lessons, boat excursions, parasailing, water skiing, and windsurfing (for a fee).

5. Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana – All Inclusive – Adults Only – Uvero Alto

Live Aqua Beach Resort Punta Cana

designed for comfort, peace and quiet and discreet, exclusive luxury.

A 347-room, adults-only, all-inclusive resort located 25 miles north of Punta Cana International Airport opened its doors in February and celebrated its grand opening on May 27, 2021. The $120 million property was ribbon-cut by Dominican President Luis Abinader. Through a vine-laced breezeway, the resort opens onto a picturesque landscape of gardens and pools with the beach on the horizon. On either side of the central pool and gardens, there are mostly three-story buildings with guestrooms. You’ll see clean lines and minimalism everywhere you look.

In all five of the main buildings, all ground-floor rooms are swim-ups, featuring steps that lead to long pools that line the side of the buildings. In terms of size and layout, the rooms are similar to the standard units, but they have expanded terraces with a semi-private plunge pool that can be used for relaxing. A variety of suite types are available. Tierra Suites offer 474 square feet of beach-facing space and have a private plunge pool. Located above the hotel lobby, Fuego Suites offer a long pool with a view of the entire resort.

Located just off the lobby, Live Aqua’s spa is another standout feature. Upon arrival, the facility’s manager invited me to swim in the indoor pool with its body-pummeling jets. Typically, deep-tissue massages last 50 minutes and cost $150-$200. The resort had 11 pools dedicated to swim-up rooms, plus an additional five shared by all guests. With the exception of the main pool, located between Huzur and the sand, there were never more than a few people in any of these large pools during my stay. The day was filled with upbeat pool aerobics and spinning classes, but otherwise, it was a pretty relaxed environment. There is a lot of seaweed on this beach, as with most shorelines facing the Atlantic in the Dominican Republic, which is removed by a tractor every few days. Only a few people in the group swam in the ocean, but beach loungers were made use of. Considering the size of the resort, food options are plentiful.

5. Barceló Bávaro Beach – Adults Only All Inclusive – Bavaro

Barceló Bávaro Palace All Inclusive

An adults-only resort with a romantic atmosphere, a tranquil pool area, and great restaurant scene

Located at the Barcelo Bavaro Grand Resort, the Barcelo Bavaro Beach is a popular spot for honeymooners and couples. A pool with ocean views is central to the airy, open property. The resort is part of the Spanish Barcelo chain, which is popular with Europeans and Americans. Swimming, volleyball, and dancing are offered daily, but unlike a lot of resorts on the beach, the music is not overly loud here, and guests aren’t urged to join. There is a much steeper drop-off and stronger waves along this northern stretch of the coast than to the south in Punta Cana. This adults-only resort, which is part of the Barcelo Bavaro complex, offers all of the amenities of a mega-resort as well as the tranquility of a smaller property. The Barcelo Bavaro Palace is about a five-minute shuttle ride away from most of these amenities.

White bedding, light blue accent walls, and wicker furniture are among the features of the beachy rooms. Each room has a flat-screen TV, iPod dock, and Wi-Fi access (for an additional fee except in the Premium Level). All rooms have patios or balconies, which creates an airy feel. Vanity areas are large in the Superior Rooms but the bathrooms are cramped (no bathtubs).

Spa facilities at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace include an indoor and outdoor treatment room, an infinity pool, and a salon. In the lounge area, guests can relax to gentle music while receiving fruit, water, and tea. The hotel offers massage cabanas at Bavaro Beach for guests who want spa treatments without having to take a shuttle.

Although guests of the Barcelo Bavaro Palace can use the four pools, Barcelo Bavaro Beach – Adults Only has its own large pool where the resort’s majority of activities take place. A lively poolside bar is surrounded by palm trees and lounge chairs with ocean views. Jacuzzis can be found throughout the pool. Three a la carte restaurants serve dinner, while two on-site buffet restaurants serve breakfast and lunch. Restaurants at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace are also available to guests. Some Barcelo Bavaro Palace restaurants are included, but others require an additional fee for Barcelo Bavaro Beach resort guests.

6. Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa – Adults Only

Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa - Adults Only:

Elegant all-inclusive resort perfect for couples who love the beach

Beachfront all-inclusive resort with adult-only policy and gorgeous sea views. Located in ritzy Cap Cana, Secrets Cap Cana Resort & Spa is a luxurious oceanfront resort for adults only. In addition to its oceanfront location and beautifully manicured grounds, Secrets Cap Cana boasts tropical landscaping with colorful plants, small grassy fields, and palm trees that stretch for miles. An adults-only, all-inclusive policy helps to cultivate an atmosphere of tranquility and exclusivity.

There are 457 rooms here that are a step up from most chain resorts, and an extra touch of modernity that amplifies the views of the garden, pool, or ocean. In every room, one or two queen beds have blue bed runners, violet throw pillows, and hardwood headboards. The hardwood doors and built-ins give the room an upmarket feel, and the woven tapestries hanging over the beds contrast with the metal pendant lamps. Cushions and purple throw pillows round out the look with tan love seats. There is a minibar stocked with beer, soda, juice, and Champagne, and each room has a Nespresso coffeemaker. Guests enjoy both services for free, though those on Preferred Club plans also have upgraded minibars as well as pillow menus and butlers.

There are many enticing features at Secrets Cap Cana, but its palm-tree-lined beach stands out among the others. There are lounge chairs, umbrellas, and hammocks lining the beach. The Secrets resort features two zero-entry freshwater infinity pools that overlook the ocean. They are surrounded by lounge chairs and umbrellas and have shallow areas for swimming. Guests can also enjoy walk-up pool bars and warm-water whirlpools. One of the resort’s pools is exclusive to Preferred Club members (a pricey upgrade plan).

Despite a large number of restaurants, many of them receive mixed reviews. Markets Buffet, the popular lunchtime dining spot, is also reported to have a menu that doesn’t change and is monotonous. At Himitsu you can eat teppanyaki at teppanyaki tables and sushi at the sushi bar. In addition to El Patio, Secrets also has a French restaurant called Bordeaux. All restaurants in the hotel offer a variety of food, including seafood, steaks, and Italian dishes.

8. Las Terrazas VIP Pool Beach Club & Spa

Las Terrazas VIP Pool Beach Club & Spa

An elegant resort with a mostly relaxed atmosphere and smart design

Las Terrazas Resort and Residences, a luxurious South Beach alternative to San Pedro, offers you free welcome massages, a sleek swimming pool, and a sophisticated beach vibe.

Each of the hotel’s 39 air-conditioned rooms features granite counters and king-size poster beds, as well as black and brown décor. There are sprawling multi-level apartments at Las Terrazas, each with one to three bedrooms and plenty of space to enjoy life on the Caribbean coast. Modern and minimalist, the interior features marble floors, blossoming flower photos, and geometric collage paintings on the walls. Staying at one of the residences here is like staying in a home as each unit has several rooms. The rooms are equipped with air conditioning and most have bamboo-bladed ceiling fans. A flat-screen TV with surround-sound audio system, DVD player, and low-profile sleeper sofa is provided in the living room. Each room features granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, and everything you could possibly need in a kitchen.

Considering the beach is not ideal for swimming because of the seagrass, the saltwater infinity pool is a major plus. There is a poolside bar, Jugo Bar, which features happy hour drink specials and weekly rum tastings, but the latter is not free. On select weeknights, O Restaurant, the resort’s fine-dining restaurant, serves savory international cuisine and offers sushi and live music. A fish cleaning and serving service are available in the restaurant along with renting fishing poles and cast nets.

Dive trips are offered by the dive shop, free introductory lessons are available, and children can enroll in a diving course (fee). Services like massage, facials, manicures, and pedicures are available at the full-service Serenity Spa. Yoga classes are also held twice a week, though they’re not included in the room rate

9. Whala! Urban punta cana – Bavaro

whala!urban punta cana

Affordable all-inclusive nearby the beach

It’s an all-inclusive hotel with a cheap price tag and a youthful crowd that’s ready to party. Whala’s all-inclusive alcohol, three pool areas, and beach club make for a fun stay though the hotel itself isn’t especially rowdy. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in downtown Bavaro, but next to that, there are not many entertainment options at Whala.

There are three room categories at Whala! : Standard Rooms, Superior Rooms, and Suites. Suites are the only upgrade worth paying for, as Standard and Superior Rooms are nearly identical. There are one queen or two double beds in Standard and Superior rooms, as well as mirrored vanities with mini-fridges, tiny flat-screen TVs, and old-fashioned safes. There are no tubs in the bathrooms but they are nicely tiled, and there is a shower stall. When it comes to hot water, it does not always work. The rooms are furnished with light wood furniture, bland butter yellow walls, and cheap tile floors. Although the rooms don’t get any style points, they are clean and well-maintained.

Although whala! is not known for its amazing on-site amenities, but for the price, there are some pleasant features. This property has three pools named Pool 1, Pool 2, and Pool 3. Pool 1 is the smallest pool on the property, surrounded by plastic cafe tables and lounge chairs covered with umbrellas. It is located between the lobby and the buffet restaurant. Along with the larger size, Swimming Pool 2 offers a hot tub, bar, lounge area sheltered from the elements, and an outdoor stage where performances are staged each week. The property’s third and largest pool, Pool 3 looks like a dumbbell. This pool is set back from the street and has a quieter atmosphere than the other two.

Although it doesn’t directly overlook the beach, the hotel has its own beach club about two minutes away. There are plenty of lounge chairs, a volleyball net, and a bar that serves snacks and drinks at the beach club.

There are two restaurants at Whala, a buffet and an a la carte option. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available seven days a week at the buffet, but the a la carte restaurant is only open for dinner on select nights. The a la carte restaurant is not included in the all-inclusive plan, so guests should visit nearby restaurants if they prefer eating other than a buffet.

10. Karibo Punta Cana – Bavaro

Karibo Punta Cana

Independent travelers and golfers will enjoy this subdued tropical style

In the vicinity of Punta Cana and right on the grounds of the White Sands Golf Club, the three-star Karibo Punta Cana offers a pleasant condo-style lodging option. Karibo Punta Cana, an elegant condo-style hotel located in Bavaro, welcomes guests with high ceilings, soft lighting, and tasteful tropical-modern decor. The first thing you see when you enter the lounge is a sparkling, bright pool and nothing but polished light marble in every direction. Everything seems brand new and shiny. Although there is a very large common area with a thatched roof, bright abstract art, as well as a lot of wicker seating, it is mostly quiet here. Located right on the White Sands Golf Course, this is the perfect spot for those who enjoy golf. However, that also means that the social scene here at night is pretty subdued.

There is a mixture of traditional hotel rooms and apartments at this hotel. However, all of the rooms have a pleasantly modern style that contains dark wood, white walls, and bold tropical colors. There is a slightly tropical-modern feel to the place, with richly colored abstract paintings hanging on the white walls and wicker and dark wood furniture arranged in a mixture. The floors of the rooms are made of polished tan marble, which adds a touch of class and warmth, while the soft furnishings are orange. You’ll also find air conditioning and flat-screen TVs, along with free Wi-Fi (which can be spotty). Most apartments offer kitchens with granite countertops, plus microwaves, full-size fridges, dishwashers, stoves, ovens, and dishwashers, although cookware is limited. Units may have washers and dryers. Though the rooms are beautiful, reports say upkeep and maintenance issues are common — so we recommend checking locks, TVs, and outlets.

A circular, open-air lobby, complete with a small bar and lounge, sends a sense of class and elegance throughout the hotel. Despite the bar’s small size and limited cocktail selection, it boasts wine and beer, plus a relaxing atmosphere. The restaurant serves only a slim menu, but it uses fresh local ingredients. This hotel’s 24-hour pool is the star attraction — it’s large enough for laps and the 24-hour rule ensures that there will always be an empty space. It is also possible for children to play in a round kids’ pool on the grassy section next to it.

It’s a bit far to walk to the nearest beach, so the hotel offers a free shuttle service at the end of the day.

Hotel Rating: 8.0 (Very Good)    Rooms: 66
